How Often Does Copper Hair Need a Refresh, and What Does It Cost?
Quick answer
Bright copper is usually treated like red, so plan on a refresh about every four to six weeks, while softer coppers can often go longer. Karen Shardlow's color touch-ups start at $83, so a yearly budget starts at about $500 to $750 depending on your length and timing.

Copper is easy to fall for and easy to underestimate. The first appointment is only part of the cost, because the color keeps changing after you leave the salon. If you're deciding whether you can keep up with it, two things matter: how quickly your shade fades and how quickly your roots show.
How often does copper need a refresh?
Plan on about every four to six weeks if you want it bright. Colorists generally treat copper like red, as one of the quicker shades to lose its shine. That's salon practice, not a proven ranking, and your own hair may behave differently.
Softer coppers close to your natural color can often go longer, because the fade and the regrowth are less obvious. The right timing depends on your shade, so ask Karen when you book.
Longer gaps can also be better for your hair. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests adding more time between touch-ups, especially when the air is dry, and stretching them to every 8 to 10 weeks or longer in winter.
Is fading or regrowth the bigger problem?
They're different problems, and they call for different fixes.
- Fading happens through the lengths. The color looks duller or less warm, even if your roots look fine. A shine treatment can help bring the tone back.
- Regrowth happens at the part. If your natural color is far from copper, a line will show however bright the rest stays. That takes a touch-up.
If you know which one bothers you first, you'll know which appointment to book. It may not be a full color every time.
What does copper cost to keep up for a year?
These are Karen's starting prices, multiplied out. They're before tip, and your length and thickness can raise them.
| Upkeep plan | Visits a year | Starting price per visit | Starting yearly total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Touch-up every 6 weeks, short to medium | About 8 | $83+ | $664 |
| Touch-up every 6 weeks, long to extra long | About 8 | $94 | $752 |
| Touch-up every 8 weeks, short to medium | About 6 | $83+ | $498 |
| Touch-up every 8 weeks, long to extra long | About 6 | $94 | $564 |
| Full color every 8 weeks, long | About 6 | $105+ | $630 |
| Shine treatment, four times a year | 4 | $42+ | $168 |
Karen's full color starts at $94 for short hair and $98 for medium. Color and shine together starts at $136. The rest are on her price list.
This is arithmetic, not a quote. Treat the numbers as a floor, and remember your first copper appointment may be different from your upkeep visits.
How can you stretch the time between visits?
Water is the main thing to manage. Research on permanent color found that fading during shampooing happens mainly because dye dissolves in water. A review of hair cleansing says it's not necessary to shampoo daily unless your scalp makes a lot of oil, so washing less often is a good place to start.
The American Academy of Dermatology also lists fading among the effects of sun on hair, and says the effects are stronger on dyed hair. Our guide to keeping red hair from fading covers the full wash routine, and most of it applies to copper.
Is copper right if you don't want the upkeep?
Maybe not at its brightest. If regular visits don't suit you, ask about a softer copper close to your natural color, or read our guide to low maintenance hair color.
