Gray Blending vs Highlights: Which Is Right for You?
Quick answer
Gray blending softens gray into your natural color with no lift, while highlights add lighter pieces that help camouflage it. Neither covers every gray, and with Karen gray blending starts at $47 and partial highlights at $94.

Once gray starts to show, a solid root color isn't the only option. Gray blending and highlights both make gray less obvious, but they work in different ways and leave you with different upkeep.
Gray hair comes from a decline or loss of pigment in the follicle, so the question is how you'd like to work with it. You can soften it into the color around it, or surround it with lighter pieces so it stands out less.
How do they compare?
| Gray blending | Highlights | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Softens gray into your natural color | Adds lighter pieces through your hair |
| Lifts your color? | No | Yes |
| Covers all gray? | No | No |
| Time with Karen | About 90 minutes | About 1 3/4 to 2 3/4 hours |
| How it wears | Fades gradually over about four weeks | Regrowth and brassiness can show over time |
| Starting price with Karen | From $47 | Partial from $94, full from $108 |
Highlight prices rise with length. Partial highlights start at $94 for short hair and $113 for extra long. Full highlights start at $108 for short hair and $133 for extra long. Those are all starting prices, and your quote may be higher.
Which hides gray better?
It depends on what you mean by hide. Gray blending keeps some gray visible and softens the contrast. Highlights camouflage it by adding light pieces around it, which works best when you want a brighter look anyway.
If you want every gray gone, neither is the right tool. A root touch-up gives solid coverage, though it needs more regular visits. Most people covering gray come back every four to six weeks.
Which is gentler on your hair?
Gray blending has the simpler case here, because it adds no lift. Highlights do lighten hair. The American Academy of Dermatology says lightening more than three shades takes higher volumes of peroxide, which causes more damage. That doesn't rule highlights out, but it's a good reason to ask how light you really need to go.
If your hair is already fragile, or you're worried about thinning or hair loss, see a dermatologist before you make any changes to your color.
Which is easier to live with?
Gray blending wears away softly, with no hard line, so you see less of a line while you wait for your next visit. It does fade, so it suits people happy to repeat it or let it go.
Highlights last in a different way. They grow out instead of fading away, and a gloss between visits can refresh the tone. Our guide on balayage vs highlights covers softer options if the grow-out is your main concern.
