How Often Should You Get a Haircut?
Quick answer
Most people should get a haircut every 4 to 6 weeks for short hair, every 6 to 10 weeks for medium hair, and every 8 to 12 weeks or more for long hair.

There's no single rule. It depends on your length, your shape and how fussy you are about it.
| Hair length | How often |
|---|---|
| Short cuts and pixies | Every 4 to 6 weeks |
| Bobs and medium lengths | Every 6 to 10 weeks |
| Long hair | Every 8 to 12 weeks or more |
What are the signs it's time for a cut?
- Your shape has lost its line
- Ends look thin or feel rough
- It takes longer to style than it used to
Does cutting make hair grow faster?
No. Hair grows from the root, at about 1 cm (under half an inch) a month according to StatPearls, so a small trim costs you little length. But trimming removes damaged ends, so hair you're growing out keeps looking healthier.
Growing it out?
Keep coming, just less often. A small trim keeps the shape while you gain length.
Should you time cuts with color appointments?
If you color, it can make sense to line up cuts with color visits. Read how often you should color your hair.
