Root Touch-Up: Salon or At Home?

Quick answer

An at-home root kit is cheaper and can work if your color is simple and your regrowth is easy to reach. A salon touch-up costs more, but a stylist can see and match the color, which matters more if you've had color problems before.

Root color is one of the more forgiving jobs to try at home, and it's also one of the most repeated. The choice comes down to cost, how complicated your color is and how much you'd mind a mistake. Prices were checked in November 2026.

How much do you save at home?

Say you color every five weeks, which is about ten times a year. At the prices above, ten kits come to about $190. Ten touch-ups with Karen come to $830 at the starting price, before tip. That's a real difference, and there's no reason to pretend otherwise.

The sums change if a home job goes wrong. Corrective color is listed at $160 or more per hour and can take more than one visit.

When is at-home root color a reasonable choice?

It's most likely to work when:

  • You have one solid color and you're matching it closely
  • You're covering a small amount of regrowth
  • You can see and reach your whole hairline and part
  • You've used the same product before without a reaction

When is the salon the better call?

It's usually worth paying for a stylist if:

  • You have highlights, balayage or several tones to work around
  • Your last home color came out too dark, too warm or patchy
  • You're going lighter, not just covering gray
  • Your regrowth is hard to reach at the back of your head

Only coloring the roots is kinder to your hair than repeating color from root to tip. That's true at home as well, so stick to the regrowth and follow the timing in the box.

What should you check before using a home kit?

Do the patch test, every time. The FDA's hair dye guidance says to rub a little dye on the inside of your elbow or behind your ear, leave it for two days, and not use the dye if you get a rash. It says to repeat the test each time you dye your hair.

Clairol's page also warns against using the product if you have a known PPD or PTD allergy, because a severe reaction is still possible. Follow the leaflet in your box, since instructions vary by product.

Is there a third option?

Yes. If the schedule is what wears you down, gray blending may suit you better than either one. It softens gray instead of covering it, so regrowth is less obvious. With Karen it starts at $47. You can also read more about root touch-ups in Georgetown, including how long they take for longer hair.
