What drives the total?

• Lightening first. Most vivid shades are semi-permanent, and that type of dye contains no hydrogen peroxide, so it can't lighten hair. Any lifting has to happen before the color goes on, and darker or previously colored hair usually takes longer.
• Time. Length, thickness and the number of shades all add time to the appointment.
• Refreshes. Most vivid shades need a refresh every four to six weeks. At six weeks, that's about eight visits a year, so ask what a refresh will cost as well as the first appointment.
• Regrowth. If your whole head is lightened, your roots will need lightening too. Ask how your upkeep would be priced.
