Thinking About Vivid Hair Color? What to Know First
Quick answer
Vivid hair color usually needs lightened hair, a refresh every four to six weeks, and cooler, less frequent washing. Price depends mostly on how much lightening your hair needs.

Vivid color is more fun than it is complicated, but it does help to know what you're signing up for.
Will my hair need bleach?
Usually. Vivid color is sheer, so it shows the color underneath it. Blonde hair may need little or no lightening. Dark or previously colored hair will need more, and sometimes more than one visit.
How long does it last?
Semi-permanent dye sits near the surface of the hair and usually lasts about 6 to 12 washes, according to a review of hair dyes. That's why vivid shades need regular refreshes.
| Shade | Typical life before a refresh |
|---|---|
| Deep purple, deep blue | About 4 to 6 weeks |
| Bright red, hot pink | About 4 to 6 weeks |
| Pastels | As little as 2 to 3 weeks |
What affects the price?
Your starting color, your length, and how much of your hair is colored. A hidden peekaboo section costs far less than a full head. That's why vivid color is usually priced by quote.
How to keep it bright
- Wash less often, in cool water
- Use a sulfate-free shampoo
- Ask about a color-depositing conditioner
- Protect it from sun and pool water

Frequently asked questions
Does vivid hair color damage your hair?
The lightening step is usually what stresses hair, not the color itself.
What vivid color lasts the longest?
Deeper shades such as dark purple and deep blue tend to last longer than pastels.
Can I try vivid color without doing my whole head?
Yes. Peekaboo sections and a money piece are low-commitment ways to start.
