Why Does Blue Hair Fade to Green, and How Do You Stop It?

Quick answer

Blue hair turns green when the dye fades and the yellow left in lightened hair starts to show through. You can't stop blue fading altogether, but a paler base, less washing and regular refreshes all slow the shift.

Dark hair melting into blue and teal

Blue that looked deep and even at the salon can drift toward teal, then toward green, after a few weeks of washing. It's frustrating, but it usually isn't a sign that something went wrong. It's what happens when a sheer color thins out over a yellow base.

Why does blue turn green?

Vivid color is sheer, so it shows whatever sits underneath it. Dark hair lightened for blue usually reaches a pale yellow, not white, which means yellow is still there under the color.

Physics explains the rest. A yellow filter absorbs blue light and a cyan filter absorbs red light, so together they let green through. Hair isn't a lab filter, but the same idea applies. While the blue is strong, it hides the yellow. As it thins, the two start to mix in what you see.

Why does the blue wash out so quickly?

Most vivid shades are semi-permanent. One review of hair dyes describes this type as sitting shallowly in the hair, held by weak attractions, and lasting about 6 to 12 washes. Your real number will depend on the product, your hair and how you care for it. That's why the wash routine matters so much, and why blue usually needs a refresh every four to six weeks.

How do you slow it down?

What to do Why it helps
Start with a paler, cleaner base Less yellow is left to show through
Wash less often Fewer washes means less dye lost. Daily shampooing usually isn't necessary unless your scalp is very oily
Ask about a color-depositing conditioner It puts a little color back between visits
Cover up in strong sun The American Academy of Dermatology says sun can leave hair faded, especially if it's dyed or bleached
Take care around pools Chlorine and copper in pool water can tint blond hair green, so lightened hair is worth protecting
Book your refresh early Topping up before the blue thins too far is easier than chasing green later

Cool water and sulfate-free shampoo are also standard salon advice. Good research comparing hot and cool rinses for vivid color is hard to find, so treat that as a sensible habit, not proven science.

What if it has already gone green?

Don't reach for bleach or a box of something darker. Blue can leave a tint behind for a while, and more product on top can make it harder to fix.

You have three realistic options:

  • Refresh it. If you still want blue, a new application may be all it needs.
  • Change direction. A deeper shade may be possible. Our guide to vivid hair color explains what affects that choice.
  • Leave blue behind. Taking out a stubborn tint can count as color correction, which is listed at $160 or more per hour. That's a starting price, and it can take more than one visit.
